Carrefour International is a leading international cooperation organization working to advance equality for women and girls and to eradicate poverty in some of the poorest countries in the world in Africa and South America. They contribute to the creation of a sustainable and more equitable world by mobilizing and strengthening the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities through knowledge sharing, solidarity and collective action. They have been advancing equality for 60 years with over 9,000 volunteers from Canada and the South taking part in Carrefour mandates.

The needs of women, girls and young people have never been greater. Inequalities between the sexes favor an increase in sexual abuse and violence against women and girls, as well as the violation of their fundamental rights. Extreme poverty, exacerbated by climate change, leads to food insecurity which further increases the vulnerability of the poor, especially women and girls. Together, they are piloting innovative programs that aim to prevent violence and abuse, to support collective and small businesses that generate sustainable income for women, young people and poor people in rural areas. Some notable highlights are:

  • 62 girls’ empowerment clubs help 2,500 girls each year move from victims of violence to change
  • 255 Ghanaian volunteer paralegals improved access to justice for 53,000 people
  • Senegalese soap producers increased their income by 40%

Carrefour International Students requested IT equipment to help further their mission. ERA was delighted to donate 5 projectors which will be used for projecting PowerPoint during the training and presentation of their activities abroad and in Canada.

Their mission is to:

  • bring together international students into a structure to defend their interests.
  • facilitate their enrollment at Canadian universities, colleges and CEGEPs, and redirect them.
  • provide a shuttle and reception service at the airport
  • make it easier to get housing and the first student job – building the capabilities related to the computer tool (training of certain software)
  • assist foreign students in difficulty
