Connected in Motion’s (CIM) mission is to foster a community of people living with Type 1 diabetes through peer-based experiential diabetes education, physical activity, and outdoor adventure pursuits so that they may inspire one another to live life without limits.

CIM is a Canadian-based charity who is partnering with another non-profit to bring together families from across Canada who are living with Type 1 diabetes. This is the second year they’ve hosted the conference which is happening November 8-10 in Niagara Falls. This year, they will see over 500 individuals joining them for the weekend. The conference hosts 6 streams of programming (for various aged youth with diabetes, parents, and adults with diabetes). The ERA was excited to donate a projector to help this deserving organization facilitate such a large conference.

It took 10 years for CIM’s founder, Chloe, to meet another person with Type 1 diabetes. She had been flying solo with her diabetes – celebrating the successes alone and navigating the challenges by herself. During a backpacking trip in Australia in 2006, everything changed. Chloe met a group of cyclists who not only were all living with Type 1 diabetes, but they were thriving amongst a community of people who ‘got it’. These cyclists were not only experiencing the phenomenon of a Slipstream through cycling but in their diabetes too.

Chloe returned back to Canada and, in 2008, Connected in Motion was born, creating a place for adults to connect and feel the power of community. In 2009, Connected in Motion launched its first Slipstream – a winter weekend retreat in northern Ontario attended by 27 people living with Type 1 diabetes. By the end of the weekend, they were asking for the next one and we’ve been growing and evolving the Slipstream ever since.

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam-packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new and learn from each other’s’ experiences. Simply put, this is a diabetes camp for adults!
