John Howard Society of Toronto Receives One Computer and Three Laptops

By electronic recycling association March 18, 2020

Since 1929 the John Howard Society has been committed to providing effective services that assist in reducing crime and its causes.

The Criminal Justice System affects us all:

  • Some of us have been directly involved in the system or know someone who has.
  • All of us pay taxes that fund the system.
  • Many of us have been a victim of crime.

Today’s Justice System is struggling to find an effective response. John Howard Society’s research has shown that longer prison sentences are NOT an effective method of rehabilitation, NOR an effective way of reducing crime. They support the appropriate use of community-based sanctions, gradual release, and prevention-focused programs. The John Howard Society of Ontario has grown to include 19 local offices and over 700 staff and 750 volunteers. In 1967, the John Howard Society of Ontario obtained its registered charitable status. Together with the other provincial and territorial offices, the John Howard Society of Ontario is a member of the John Howard Society of Canada.

Their mission:

  • Provides for the effective integration into the community of those in conflict with the law and provides, or encourages others to provide, services to those in contact with, or affected by the criminal justice system;
  • Promotes changes in the law and the administration of justice which will lead to the more humane and effective treatment of individuals;
  • Promotes citizen awareness of the problems of crime and its causes, acceptance of responsibility to respond to these problems and involvement in the delivery and management of justice-related programs;
  • Promotes the fair and humane treatment of all incarcerated persons and seeks to ensure that all forms of detention and imprisonment comply with relevant legal and human rights standards.

“Making our community safer by supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of those who have been in conflict with the law”

ERA proudly donated one computer and three laptops to John Howard Society of Ontario’s Toronto office. These are needed for off-site staff and students to use either remotely or in their office for data entries and projects.
